Regis College Honourary Doctorates 2008

Regis College is proud to announce the recipients of its honourary doctorate for the November 2008 Convocation. The candidates are distinguished on the basis of their contributions to society, culture and the church. This year, our three candidates are linked by their shared commitment to the betterment of public health. The recipients are:

  • Dr. Margret Hovanec is the Director and co-founder of the Lupina Foundation, which is dedicated to funding research relating to issues of health and society. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Toronto Bail Program as well as the South Riverdale Community Health Centre. Dr. Hovanec recently published Redefining Retirement: New Realities for Boomer Women with Elizabeth Shilton, and is a practicing psychologist in Toronto. She will be delivering the Chancellor’s Lecture for Regis College on Nov. 28th.
  • Sr. Margaret Myatt is serving her second term as the General Superior for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, which she has directed to confront issues of poverty and affordable housing. She has provided leadership for public hospitals, having served four years as Administrative Assistant at St. Michael’s Hospital, ten years as CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Toronto, and eight years as CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Home in Guelph. She hosted Pope John Paul II in CSJ Motherhouse, Morrow Park, for the 2002 World Youth Day.
  • Dr. Peter Warrian is a Senior Research Fellow at the Munk Centre, and has dedicated 20 years as an economic consultant in labour market analysis for businesses, government and labour unions. He received his PhD. from the University of Waterloo and a post-doctorate from the Sloan School of Management, MIT. He previously served as Research Director of the United Steelworkers of America, and is currently Chair of the Philanthropic Foundations of Canada, Director and Chair of the Finance Committee of the Toronto Symphony, and Vice-Chair of the Wellesley Central Health Corporation. Like Dr. Margret Hovanec, his is involved with the Lupina Foundation, serving as Managing Director.
