Fall Film Series - Lourdes: Discernment, Looking for God in the World

Wed, 2011-11-02 19:00 - 21:00

The films in the 2011 Fall Film Series  examines the questions and dynamics that surround discernment.  The films do not propose to carry you through a process of discernment. Rather, they aim to help you examine the way you discern.  Discernment is simply the way we concretely live our relationship with God. When we live intimately with God we share the same heart and mind as God.  We look on the world the same way, we have the same friends, and the same projects.  Discernment incarnates that relationship. It is about fidelity, not success, inter-dependence not narcissism, trust rather than political acumen.  We discern to find love and to remain in love.  There are basically three different types of  discernment.  We discern 1. to find out what is the best thing to do in a situation  2. to discover what forces are at work in a situation  and 3. to see if those forces work for good or not. When we discern we discover God gives us experiences not answers, and we are invited to read those answers from the perspective of the lover searching for a greater intimacy with the beloved.

The films chosen give examples of different discernments and the way those discernments played out in the lives of the characters involved.  What we ask you to do, after looking at the film and getting some sense of what is going on is to ask yourself simple questions.  What touched you in the film and why?   How do these relate to your own life and your life experiences?  What do they show you about your pattern of making decisions?  How do they illuminate your good decisions?  And how do they illuminate your bad decisions? How do they help you discern what is going on around you, in your culture, your communities and families and in your work?

If we see our response to every experience we have had as a way in which we and God speak to each other, what is God telling us through each film?  Please note we are not asking what the moral of the film is. We are not asking for an objective analysis, and so an evasion of our personal interiority analysis. We are asking what is the inter-subjective drama that is going on between you and God as you enter the film as an act of contemplation.

Think of the films as composing you, and disposing you to meet God in your life.
