Our Mission Today
Regis College has been supporting the mission of the Church by educating men and women for ministry for more than 75 years.
As the Jesuit graduate school of Theology, we draw on a long tradition of teaching to educate students for ministry in our unique form of spirituality.
Today’s students are challenged to succeed in a challenging world. Many carry debt and work in part-time or even full-time jobs.
Through your financial support we can offer scholarships and bursaries to those who are seeking to serve the Church in their own unique way. But there’s more!
The OTSS Program
The Ontario government recently announced another initiative designed to support students enrolled in Ontario Colleges and Universities. Called the Ontario Trust for Student Support or OTSS, the program is designed to provide financial support to students who would not otherwise be able to attend the college or university of their choice.
So you can double your support to Regis College when you make your gift now.
For every dollar you give to the Regis College Scholarship Appeal, the Ontario government will match it. There’s no better reason to consider a gift! Your Support is Needed!
Through your generosity, Regis College can continue its mission and support students worthy of financial assistance.
Our graduates make a real difference in the lives of many who depend on them. Your gift enables you to share in their service.
The need for scholarship support for students is greater than ever. That is why we are appealing to you now.
Please consider a gift to one of the many funds currently in place or leave it to us to place your gift in the fund of our choice. Either way, you can be assured that your gift will support a student who will make a difference in the world.
Planned Giving
Planned Giving allows you to make an important gift to a cause you believe in, Regis College, while still getting the best tax benefits possible and achieving personal financial goals.
A planned gift to Regis College can be made outright to the College for its immediate use or deferred - arranged now for completion later. Planned Gifts are designed to support the college and provide a life income for the donor.
This section provides some insights into the ways you can make a Planned Gift to Regis College.
Gifts of Cash or Property
An outright gift of Cash or Property to Regis College today puts the full amount of the gift to work immediately, providing support to the faculty and administration in the important work of theological education. With this kind of gift you get the satisfaction of seeing your gift at work and knowing that lives are being touched right now.
Gifts of cash are recognized, for tax purposes, in the year that they are given. Your gift is tax deductible in accordance with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency policies. Depending on your federal and provincial tax rate, the combined tax savings can be nearly half your contribution.
Gifts of Securities
Non cash assets, such as securities can also become outright gifts. The federal government has made gifts of securities particularly attractive by eliminating the capital gain applied when given as a gift to Regis College.
Your gift to Regis may be designated to any one of our many scholarships or to an area of greatest need as determined by the College. Be assured that any gift received is greatly appreciated and will be put to work for the purposes of furthering the Kingdom.
Will or Bequest
It is estimated that only three in ten North Americans have a will. If you are among those that have yet to draft a will, your lifetime accumulation of wealth will be distributed according to state or provincial law. At the time of death.
Here are some examples of various forms of bequests, with appropriate wording:
- A General Bequest designates a certain dollar amount of property, usually cash. “I give to Regis College the sum of $10,000 to be used for general purposes at the discretion of the President.”
- A Specific Bequest directs that Regis College receive a specific piece of property: “I give to Regis College 500 shares of XYZ stock...”
- A Residual Bequest designates for the College all or a portion of whatever remains of the estate after all debts, taxes, expenses or other bequests have been paid: “I give to Regis College fifty percent (50%) of the rest, residual and remainder of my estate…”
- A Contingent Bequest takes effect under certain conditions: “In the event that my wife does not survive me I give to Regis College the sum of…”
In addition to choosing the form of a bequest, you also have choices as to the purpose for which your gift will be used. Most gifts to the College are unrestricted, supporting the general purpose of the school. But you may choose to make a restricted bequest directed to support a particular programme or area of education.
You may also specify that the principle of the bequest is for an endowment, with only the income expended for the purpose you designate. It may also be used to establish a named fund in accordance with your wishes.
Whatever you decide, Regis suggests that you consult your financial advisor and confer with a representative of the College to be sure that your wishes can be met. Once you have completed your will, you should provide us with a copy of the specific clause in the will pertaining to the bequest. Your intention will be kept strictly confidential, if you wish.
Gift of Life Insurance
A gift of life insurance can provide a significant future gift to Regis at a modest present-day cost to you. This can be done with an existing policy or with a new one. By naming Regis as the beneficiary of your policy, you are giving a gift that will benefit future generations of students and faculty. However, to receive a current tax benefit you must transfer ownership of the policy to Regis. This entitles you to a donation receipt for the cash value of the policy. When you make Regis the owner and beneficiary of a new policy, you receive a donation receipt for each of your premium payments.
Gift Annuities and Charitable Remainder Trusts
Some planned gifts pay you back by providing income or allowing you to enjoy the use of your property even after you have given it to the College.
A
gift annuity provides both a gift for Regis and guaranteed payments for life for you and your spouse. Annuity rates are usually higher than G.I.C. rates, and some if not all of your payments are tax-free.
A
charitable remainder trust is a deferred giving arrangement under which you transfer property to a trustee. You keep the right to the property and the trust principal becomes your gift to the college.
As with all planned gifts to the College, we would ask you to consult your financial advisor for more details. We would be happy to help you with your planned gift, should you wish.
